6. பொறிவாயில் ஐந்தவித்தான் பொய்தீர் ஒழுக்க
நெறிநின்றார் நீடுவாழ் வார்.

Who has the senses signed away.

7. தனக்குவமை இல்லாதான் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
மனக்கவலை மாற்றல் அரிது.

His feet, whose likeness none can find, 7
Alone can ease the anxious mind.

8. அறவாழி அந்தணன் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
பிறவாழி நீந்தல் அரிது.

Who swims the sea of vice is he 8
Who clasps the feet of Virtue's sea.

9. கோளில் பொறியிற் குணமிலவே எண்குணத்தான்
தாளை வணங்காத் தலை.

Like senses stale that head is vain 9
Which bows not to Eight-Virtued Divine.

10. பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார்
இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார்.

The sea of births they alone swim 10
Who clench His feet and cleave to Him.

702. ஐயப் படாஅது அகத்தது உணர்வானைத்
தெய்வத்தோ டொப்பக் கொளல்.

யாது கொடுத்தும் கொளல்.

என்ன பயத்தவோ கண்.

706. அடுத்தது காட்டும் பளிங்குபோல் நெஞ்சம்
கடுத்தது காட்டும் முகம்.
What throbs in mind the face reflects 706
Just as mirror nearby objects.

707. முகத்தின் முதுக்குறைந்தது உண்டோ உவப்பினும்
காயினும் தான்முந் துறும்.
Than face what is subtler to tell 707
First if the mind feels well or ill.

708. முகம்நோக்கி நிற்க அமையும் அகம்நோக்கி
உற்ற துணர்வார்ப் பெறின்.
Just standing in front would suffice 708

709. பகைமையும் கேண்மையும் கண்ணுரைக்கும் கண்ணின்
வகைமை உணர்வார்ப் பெறின்.
Friend or foe the eyes will show 709

710. நுண்ணியம் என்பார் அளக்குங்கோல் காணுங்கால்
கண்ணல்லது இல்லை பிற.

நடைதெரிந்த நன்மை யவர்.

713. அவையறியார் சொல்லல்மேற் கொள்பவர் சொல்லின்
வகையறியார் வல்லதூஉம் இல்.
They speak in vain at length who talk 713

714. ஒளியார்முன் ஒள்ளிய ராதல் வெளியார்முன்
வான்சுதை வண்ணம் கொளல்.
Before the bright be brilliant light 714

715. நன்றென்ற வற்றுள்ளும் நன்றே முதுவருள்
முந்து கிளவாச் செறிவு.
Modest restraint all good excels 715
Which argues not before elders.

716. ஆற்றின் நிலைதளர்ந் தற்றே வியன்புலம்
ஏற்றுணர்வார் முன்னர் இழுக்கு.
Tongue-slip before the talented wise 716
Is like slipping from righteous ways.

717. கற்றறிந்தார் கல்வி விளங்கும் கசடறச்
சொல் தெரிதல் வல்லார் அகத்து.
The learning of the learned shines 717
Valued by flawless scholar-minds.

718. உணர்வ துடையார்முன் சொல்லல் வளர்வதன்
பாத்தியுள் நீர்சொரிந் தற்று.
To address understanding ones 718
Is to water beds of growing grains.

719. புல்லவையுள் பொச்சாந்தும் சொல்லற்க நல்லவையுள்
நன்கு செலச் சொல்லு வார்.
O ye who speak before the keen 719
Forgetful, address not the mean.

720. அங்கணத்துள் உக்க அமிழ்தற்றால் தங்கணத்தார்
அல்லார்முன் கோட்டி கொளல்.
To hostiles who wise words utters 720
Pours ambrosia into gutters.

721. வகையறிந்து வல்லமை வாய்சோரார் சொல்லின்
தொகையறிந்த தூய்மை யவர்.

722. கற்றாருள் கற்றார் எனப்படுவர் கற்றார்முன்
கற்ற செலச்சொல்லு வார்.
Among scholars he is scholar 722
Who holds scholars with learned lore.

723. பகையகத்துச் சாவார் எளியர் அரியர்
அவையகத்து அஞ்சா தவர்.
Many brave foes and die in fields 723
The fearless few face wise councils.

724. கற்றார்முன் கற்ற செலச்சொல்லித் தாம்கற்ற
மிக்காருள் மிக்க கொளல்.
Impress the learned with your lore 724
From greater savants learn still more.

725. ஆற்றின் அளவறிந்து கற்க அவையஞ்சா
மாற்றங் கொடுத்தற் பொருட்டு.
Grammar and logic learn so that 725
Foes you can boldly retort.

726. வாளொடென் வன்கண்ணர் அல்லார்க்கு நூலொடென்
நுண்ணவை அஞ்சு பவர்க்கு.
To cowards what can sword avail 726
And books to those who councils fail?

727. பகையகத்துப் பேடிகை ஒள்வாள் அவையகத்து
அஞ்சு மவன்கற்ற நூல்.
Like eunuch's sword in field, is vain 727
His lore who fears men of brain.

728. பல்லவை கற்றும் பயமிலரே நல்லவையுள்
நன்கு செலச்சொல்லா தார்.
Though learned much his lore is dead 728
Who says no good before the good.

729. கல்லா தவரின் கடையென்ப கற்றறிந்தும்
நல்லா ரவையஞ்சு வார்.
Who fear to face good assembly 729
Are learned idiots, certainly.

730. உளரெனினும் இல்லாரொடு ஒப்பர் களன்அஞ்சிக்
கற்ற செலச்சொல்லா தார்.
They are breathing dead who dare not 730
Empress before the wise their art.

731. தள்ளா விளையுளும் தக்காரும் தாழ்விலாச்
செல்வரும் சேர்வது நாடு.
It's country which has souls of worth 731
Unfailing yields and ample wealth.

732. பெரும்பொருளால் பெட்டக்க தாகி அருங்கேட்டான்
ஆற்ற விளைவது நாடு.
The Land has large luring treasure 732
Where pests are nil and yields are sure.

733. பொறையொருங்கு மேல்வருங்கால் தாங்கி இறைவற்கு
இறையொருங்கு நேர்வது நாடு.
It's land that bears pressing burdens 733
And pays its tax which king demands.

734. உறுபசியும் ஒவாப் பிணியும் செறுபகையும்
சேரா தியல்வது நாடு.
It is country which is free from 734
Fierce famine, plague and foemen's harm.

735. பல்குழுவும் பாழ்செய்யும் உட்பகையும் வேந்தலைக்கும்
கொல்குறும்பும் இல்லது நாடு.
Sects and ruinous foes are nil 735
No traitors in a land tranquil.

736. கேடறியாக் கெட்ட இடத்தும் வளங்குன்றா
நாடென்ப நாட்டின் தலை.
The land of lands no ruin knows 736
Even in grief its wealth yet grows.

737. இருபுனலும் வாய்ந்த மலையும் வருபுனலும்
வல்லரணும் நாட்டிற்கு உறுப்பு.
Waters up and down, hills and streams 737
With strong forts as limbs country beams.

738. பிணியின்மை செல்வம் விளைவின்பம் ஏமம்
அணியென்ப நாட்டிற் கிவ் வைந்து.
Rich yield, delight, defence and wealth 738
Are jewels of lands with blooming health.

739. நாடென்ப நாடா வளத்தன நாடல்ல
நாட வளந்தரு நாடு
A land is land which yields unsought 739
Needing hard work the land is nought.

740. ஆங்கமை வெய்தியக் கண்ணும் பயமின்றே
வேந்தமை வில்லாத நாடு.
Though a land has thus every thing 740
It is worthless without a king.

2.3.2 FORTRESS

741. ஆற்று பவர்க்கும் அரண்பொருள் அஞ்சித்தற்
போற்று பவர்க்கும் பொருள்.
The fort is vital for offence 741
Who fear the foes has its defence.

742. மணிநீரும் மண்ணும் மலையும் அணிநிழற்
காடும் உடைய தரண்.
A crystal fount, a space a mount 742
Thick woods form a fort paramount.

743. உயர்வகலம் திண்மை அருமைஇந் நான்கின்
அமைவரண் என்றுரைக்கும் நூல்.
An ideal fort's so says science: 743
High, broad, strong and hard for access.

744. சிறுகாப்பின் பேரிடத்த தாகி உறுபகை
ஊக்கம் அழிப்ப தரண்.
Ample in space, easy to hold 744
The fort foils enemies bold.

745. கொளற்கரிதாய்க் கொண்டகூழ்த் தாகி அகத்தார்
நிலைக்கெளிதாம் நீரது அரண்.
Impregnable with stores of food 745
Cosy to live-That fort is good.

746. எல்லாப் பொருளும் உடைத்தாய் இடத்துதவும்
நல்லாள் உடையது அரண்.
A fort is full of stores and arms 746
And brave heroes to meet alarms.

747. முற்றியும் முற்றா தெறிந்தும் அறைப்படுத்தும்
பற்றற் கரியது அரண்.
Besieging foes a fort withstands 747
Darts and mines of treacherous hands.

748. முற்றாற்றி முற்றி யவரையும் பற்றாற்றிப்
பற்றியார் வெல்வது அரண்.
A fort holds itself and defies 748
The attacks of encircling foes.

749. முனைமுகத்து மாற்றலர் சாய வினைமுகத்து
வீறெய்தி மாண்ட தரண்.
A fort it is that fells the foes 749
And gains by deeds a name glorious.

750. எனைமாட்சித் தாகியக் கண்ணும் வினைமாட்சி
இல்லார்கண் இல்லது அரண்.
But a fort however grand 750
Is nil if heroes do not stand.

2.3.3 WAYS OF MAKING WEALTH

751. பொருளல் லவரைப் பொருளாகச் செய்யும்
பொருளல்லது இல்லை பொருள்.
Naught exists that can, save wealth 751
Make the worthless as men of worth.

752. இல்லாரை எல்லாரும் எள்ளுவர் செல்வரை
எல்லாரும் செய்வர் சிறப்பு.
The have-nothing poor all despise 752
The men of wealth all raise and praise.

753. பொருளென்னும் பொய்யா விளக்கம் இருளறுக்கும்
எண்ணிய தேயத்துச் சென்று.
Waneless wealth is light that goes 753
To every land and gloom removes.

754. அறன்ஈனும் இன்பமும் ஈனும் திறனறிந்து
தீதின்று வந்த பொருள்.
The blameless wealth from fairest means 754
Brings good virtue and also bliss.

755. அருளொடும் அன்பொடும் வாராப் பொருளாக்கம்
புல்லார் புரள விடல்.
Riches devoid of love and grace 755
Off with it; it is disgrace!

756. உறுபொருளும் உல்கு பொருளும்தன் ஒன்னார்த்
தெறுபொருளும் வேந்தன் பொருள்.
Escheats, derelicts; spoils of war 756
Taxes duties are king's treasure.

757. அருளென்னும் அன்பீன் குழவி பொருளென்னும்
செல்வச் செவிலியால் உண்டு.
Grace the child of love is nourished 757
By the wet-nurse of wealth cherished.

758. குன்றேறி யானைப் போர் கண்டற்றால் தன்கைத்தொன்று
உண்டாகச் செய்வான் வினை.
Treasures in hand fulfil all things 758
Like hill-tuskers the wars of kings.

759. செய்க பொருளைச் செறுநர் செருக்கறுக்கும்
எஃகதனிற் கூரிய தில்.
Make wealth; there is no sharper steel 759
The insolence of foes to quell.

760. ஒண்பொருள் காழ்ப்ப இயற்றியார்ககு எண்பொருள்
ஏனை இரண்டும் ஒருங்கு.
They have joy and virtue at hand 760
Who acquire treasures abundant.

2.3.4 THE GLORY OF ARMY

761. உறுப்பமைந்து ஊறஞ்சா வெல்படை வேந்தன்
வெறுக்கையுள் எல்லாம் தலை.
The daring well-armed winning force 761
Is king's treasure and main resource.

762. உலைவிடத்து ஊறஞ்சா வன்கண் தொலைவிடத்துத்
தொல்படைக் கல்லால் அரிது.
Through shots and wounds brave heroes hold 762
Quailing not in fall, the field.

763. ஒலித்தக்கால் என்னாம் உவரி எலிப்பகை
நாகம் உயிர்ப்பக் கெடும்.
Sea-like ratfoes roar ... What if? 763
They perish at a cobra's whiff.

764. அழிவின்று அறைபோகா தாகி வழிவந்த
வன்க ணதுவே படை.
The army guards its genial flame 764
Not crushed, routed nor marred in name.

765. கூற்றடன்று மேல்வரினும் கூடி எதிர்நிற்கும்
ஆற்ற லதுவே படை.
The real army with rallied force 765
Resists even Death-God fierce.

766. மறம்மானம் மாண்ட வழிச்செலவு தேற்றம்
எனநான்கே ஏமம் படைக்கு.
Manly army has merits four:- 766
Stately-march, faith, honour, valour.

767. தார்தாங்கிச் செல்வது தானை தலைவந்த
போர்தாங்கும் தன்மை அறிந்து.
Army sets on to face to foes 767
Knowing how the trend of war goes.

768. அடல்தகையும் ஆற்றலும் இல்லெனினும் தானை
படைத்தகையால் பாடு பெறும்.
Army gains force by grand array 768
Lacking in stay or dash in fray.

769. சிறுமையும் செல்லாத் துனியும் வறுமையும்
இல்லாயின் வெல்லும் படை.
Army shall win if it is free 769
From weakness, aversion, poverty.

770. நிலைமக்கள் சால உடைத்தெனினும் தானை
தலைமக்கள் இல்வழி இல்.
With troops in large numbers on rolls 770
Army can't march missing gen'rals.

771. என்னைமுன் நில்லன்மின் தெவ்விர் பலரென்னை
முன்நின்று கல்நின் றவர்.
Stand not before my chief, O foes! 771
Many who stood, in stones repose.

772. கான முயலெய்த அம்பினில் யானை
பிழைத்தவேல் ஏந்தல் இனிது.
To lift a lance that missed a tusker 772
Is prouder than shaft that hit a hare.

773. பேராண்மை என்ப தறுகண்உன் றுற்றக்கால்
ஊராண்மை மற்றதன் எஃகு.
Valour is fight with fierce courage 773
Mercy to the fallen is its edge.

774. கைவேல் களிற்eறாடு போக்கி வருபவன்
மெய்வேல் பறியா நகும்.
At the tusker he flings his lance 774
One in body smiles another chance.

775. விழித்தகண் வேல்கொண்டா டெறிய அழித்திமைப்பின்
ஒட்டன்றோ வன்க ணவர்க்கு.
When lances dart if heroes wink 775
"It is a rout" the world will think.

776. விழுப்புண் படாதநாள் எல்லாம் வழுக்கினுள்
வைக்கும்தன் நாளை எடுத்து.
The brave shall deem the days as vain 776
Which did not battle-wounds sustain.

777. சுழலும் இசைவேண்டி வேண்டா உயிரார்
சுழல்யாப்புக் காரிகை நீர்த்து.
Their anklets aloud jingle their name 777
Who sacrifice their life for fame.

778. உறின்உயிர் அஞ்சா மறவர் இறைவன்
செறினும் சீர் குன்றல் இலர்.
The king may chide, they pursue strife; 778
They fear loss of glory; not life.

779. இழைத்தது இகவாமைச் சாவாரை யாரே
பிழைத்தது ஒறுக்கிற் பவர்.
Who will blame the heroes that lose 779
Their lives in war to keep their vows?

780. புரந்தார்கண் நீர்மல்கச் சாகிற்பின் சாக்காடு
இரந்துகோள் தக்கது உடைத்து.
Such a death shall be prayed for 780
Which draws the the tears of the ruler.

2.3.6 FRIENDSHIP

781. செயற்கரிய யாவுள நட்பின் அதுபோல்
வினைக்கரிய யாவுள காப்பு.
Like friendship what's so hard to gain? 781
That guards one against acts villain?

782. நிறைநீர நீரவர் கேண்மை பிறைமதிப்
பின்நீர பேதையார் நட்பு.
Good friendship shines like waxing moon, 782
The bad withers like waning moon.

783. நவில்தொறும் நூல்நயம் போலும் பயில்தொறும்
பண்புடை யாளர் தொடர்பு.
Like taste in books good friendship grows 783
The more one moves the more he knows.

784. நகுதற் பொருட்டன்று நட்டல் மிகுதிக்கண்
மேற்செனறு இடித்தற் பொருட்டு.
Not to laugh is friendship made 784
But to hit when faults exceed.

785. புணர்ச்சி பழகுதல் வேண்டா உணர்ச்சிதான்
நட்பாங் கிழமை தரும்.
No close living nor clasping grip 785
Friendship's feeling heart's fellowship.

786. முகநக நட்பது நட்பன்று நெஞ்சத்து
அகநக நட்பது நட்பு.
Friendship is not more smile on face 786
It is the smiling heart's embrace.

787. அழிவி னவைநீக்கி ஆறுய்தது அழிவின்கண்
அல்லல் உழப்பதாம் நட்பு.
From ruin friendship saves and shares 787
The load of pain and right path shows.

788. உடுக்கை இழந்தவன் கைபோல ஆங்கே
இடுக்கண் களைவதாம் நட்பு.
Friendship hastens help in mishaps 788
Like hands picking up dress that slips.

789. நட்பிற்கு வீற்றிருக்கை யாதெனில் கொட்பின்றி
ஒல்லும்வாய் ஊன்றும் நிலை.
Friendship is enthroned on the strength 789
That always helps with utmost warmth.

790. இனையர் இவரெமக்கு இன்னம்யாம் என்று
புனையினும் புல்லென்னும் நட்பு.
"Such we are and such they are!" 790
Ev'n this boast will friendship mar.

2.3.7 TESTING FRIENDSHIP

791. நாடாது நட்டலிற் கேடில்லை நட்டபின்
வீடில்லை நட்பாள் பவர்க்கு.
Than testless friendship nought is worse 791
For contacts formed will scarcely cease.

792. ஆய்ந்தாய்த்து கொள்ளாதான் கேண்மை கடைமுறை
தான்சாம் துயரம் தரும்.
Friendship made without frequent test 792
Shall end in grief and death at last.

793. குணமும் குடிமையும் குற்றமும் குன்றா
இனனும் அறிந்துயாக்க நட்பு.
Temper, descent, defects and kins 793
Trace well and take companions.

794. குடிப்பிறந்து தன்கண் பழிநாணு வானைக்
கொடுத்தும் கொளல்வேண்டும் நட்பு.
Take as good friend at any price 794
The nobly born who shun disgrace.

795. அழச்சொல்லி அல்லது இடித்து வழக்கறிய
வல்லார்நடபு ஆய்ந்து கொளல்.
Who make you weep and chide wrong trends 795
And lead you right are worthy friends.

796. கேட்டினும் உண்டோ ர் உறுதி கிளைஞரை
நீட்டி அளப்பதோர் கோல்.
Is there a test like misfortune 796
A rod to measure out kinsmen?

797. ஊதியம் என்பது ஒருவற்குப் பேதையார்
கேண்மை ஒரீஇ விடல்.
Keep off contacts with fools; that is 797
The greatest gain so say the wise.

798. உள்ளற்க உள்ளம் சிறுகுவ கொள்ளற்க
அல்லற்கண் ஆற்றறுப்பார் நட்பு.
Off with thoughts that depress the heart 798
Off with friends that in woe depart.

799. கெடுங்காலைக் கைவிடுவார் கேண்மை அடுங்காலை
உள்ளினும் உள்ளஞ் சுடும்.
Friends who betray at ruin's brink 799
Burn our mind ev'n at death to think.

800. மருவுக மாசற்றார் கேண்மைஒன் றீத்தும்
ஒருவுக ஒப்பிலார் நட்பு.
The blameless ones as friends embarace; 800
Give something and give up the base.
