Agathi is a plant used for both food and medicine, including spinach. Not all of it is suitable for consumption, so it's not brought inside homes. The proverb teaches us that something, no matter its abundance, is only valued if it serves a purpose.

Agathi is planted on betel leaves and grown as hedges. Its name originates from its ability to cleanse internal organs.
This small tree, belonging to the Sesbania genus in botany, is scientifically named Cespania grandiflora.

Siddha Medicine identifies 63 nutrients in Agathi Keerai, using various parts of the tree as herbal remedies. It contains 8.4% protein, 1.4% fat, and 3.1% mineral salts. Spinach, which is also consumed, contains starch, iron, and vitamin A.

Agathi and its flowers are part of South Indian cuisine, especially in Tamil Nadu.

Around fifty years ago, a medicinal belief called "idu marunthu" was prevalent, said to maintain love between spouses and attract regular customers for prostitutes. While I'm unsure of its accuracy, it's an interesting concept to explore.

Agathi helps counteract the side effects of medication, making it suitable for those who frequently take English medicines. However, it's advised to consume it once a week to avoid rashes.

Using agathi weekly helps reduce body heat, improves eyesight, facilitates easy bowel movements, and eliminates constipation and biliousness. For wounds, grinding agathi and applying it aids quick healing.

Fenugreek is known to cure peptic ulcer disease. A soup made from cleaning spinach, adding four small onions, and consuming it daily is recommended.

Agathi has various names in different languages and comes in different varieties, such as Chickppu Agathi and Seemai Agathi.

Its medicinal properties include relieving children's thirst, curing headaches, and treating measles fever, smallpox, and poison-related issues caused by smoking or sun exposure.

In Tamil Nadu, agathi is added to food after fasting on Ekadasi.

The connection between Agathiya, the first of the Siddhas, and the star Agathiya Nakshatra reflects ,
ancient Tamil knowledge of astronomy.

This herbal  is also known as "Agathiyam" and "Muni Vrutsham".

The reason is that when the constellation "Canopus"  appears in the sky,

Hence Agaththee , "Agathiyam" and "Muni Vrutsam" are named.

Because this constellation Canopus is known as Agathiya Nakshatra in Tamil.
