Shirodhara is one of the most popular ayurvedic treatment therapies used mainly for any mental health issues faced by the patient.


Pouring of the medicated oil on the forehead is called as shirodhara. It may not be only medicated oil, it can be oil, ghee, butter milk, or only the jala, that is the water. So the dhaara can be done by any of these. Normally for pitta, we use ghee, for kapha vatha we use tila tailam. While doing the shirodhara, we make the person to lie down and position of the neck is tilted and 6 inches pathway is there between the shirodhara pathway and the forehead and continuously the oscillations of the dhara pathra should be done and this is the basic way of doing the shirodhara. The temperature of the pile should be maintained around 40 degree and it should be done throughout, to that in the first half it is warm and the second half it is cool. Even the dhara that comes out, it should come out constantly. shirodhara is extremely useful in psychosomatic disorders, anxiety, nervousness, fearfulness, insomnia, in high blood pressure, in diabetes, peripheral neuritis, hair loss, migrane, shirodhara is extremely useful. Takradhaara is a type of shirodhara. When you put herbs in Takradhaara, it is used in psoriasis or skin diseases. So Takradhaara is extremely useful in hair diseases and in hair fall. Ghee dhara is used when you have burning sensation throughout the body. So shirodhara can be done in a number of ways depending on the case and the patient.
